OPEN BURNING - 2012

Open burning season begins on January 15, 2012 and continues until 4:00 PM, May 1, 2012.

Anyone wishing to burn brush in Wellfleet must obtain a permit in advance from the Wellfleet Fire Department.  The fee for the permit is $15 and must be paid for with a check or exact change in cash.

Burning may be done between 10 AM and 4 PM, weather permitting.

You must call the Fire Department at 508-349-0333 between 9:30 and 11:00 AM on each day you want to burn.  Calls for permission to burn must be made to this phone number only.

This number will connect you to an automated line which will tell you if burning is allowed that day.  If burning is allowed, you'll be prompted to leave your name, address and permit number.  If conditions change during the day, the Fire Department reserves the right to call and order that all fires be extinguished.

Complete regulations for open burning are attached to the open burning permit.  Please read the regulations carefully.  Violation of the regulations will void the permit, and may result in revocation of your permit by any fire department official.

You can download the application for an open burning permit and bring it to the Fire Department along with the $15 fee.  Applications will be processed between 9 AM and 3 PM daily.  Please bring either the exact amount in cash, or a check made out to the Town of Wellfleet.  Open burning permit applications are also available in person at the Fire Department.

Please call the Fire Department at 508-349-3754 if you need any additional information.

 Adopt a Fire Hydrant

Help the Wellfleet Fire Department

As winter approaches, please help the Wellfleet Fire Department by adopting the fire hydrant closest to your home or business and keeping it free of snow during the winter.  Please make it a point to uncover your fire hydrant after each and every snowfall. Clear a path approximately 3 feet around the hydrant and shovel a path from the street or roadway up to the fire hydrant.  These actions will allow us to quickly locate the fire hydrant, obtain a water supply for firefighting activities, and give us room to work with this hydrant should the need arise.

Please consider helping a neighbor with a medical condition or who is elderly, by shoveling out a hydrant in front of their home. This act of kindness will benefit the entire neighborhood.

In the event of a fire, we must quickly locate and gain a water supply source from the closest fire hydrant.  If a fire hydrant is buried by snow, it is difficult to find and valuable time must be spent digging it out.  The delay in gaining a water supply from a fire hydrant may disrupt the timely manner in which firefighters are able to fight the fire and may allow a fire to grow.

The Adopt A Hydrant program is an informal program, but we’d appreciate it if you call the Fire Department at 508-349-3754 to let us know which hydrant(s) you’ll be clearing snow from.

On behalf of the Wellfleet Fire Department, thank you for keeping our Town’s fire hydrants clear of snow!

Please call the Wellfleet Fire Department if you have any questions.

MAKE SURE YOUR SMOKE AND CO ALARMS ARE WORKING

Non-working smoke and CO alarms rob residents of the protection these devices were designed to provide.  The most common cause of non-working alarms is dead or missing batteries.  The Wellfleet Fire Department urges everyone to check that they have new smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries this winter.  If you need new batteries for your smoke or CO alarms, bring the old batteries to the Senior Center or Fire Department for a free exchange for new ones.  If you need help changing the batteries, or feel you can't reach them safely, please call the Fire Department and we'll send someone out to change them for you.

BEACH FIRES

Beach fire permits are not required off-season when the beach sticker office is closed.

Beach users must comply with the Beach Department’s regulations for beach fires

Each year, the Fire Department reponds to unoccupied homes which have been damaged by frozen pipes, wind, water, or fire.  If you're leaving for the off-season or going away on vacation, you can take some simple precautions to reduce the possibility of significant damage to your home.

Thanks to the Wellfleet Non-Resident Taxpayers Association,  who asked for some recommendations for their members, and who suggested that this should be widely distributed.
